Stitched Bindings for Cookbooks

Dec 21, 2005 | From the kitchen of Rose

SALLY QUESTION

Feedback: I have owned the Cake Bible for years, but the pages keep falling out. I would like to buy a used copy on the Internet, but fear getting the same edition. Can you tell me what to look for to make sure I get a later publication (and, thus, a better bound editon)?

ROSE REPLY

sadly the publisher doesn't stitch the bindings in their books so if they get a great deal of use they come unglued. once i discovered this i vowed never to sign another book contract without a guarantee that my book would be stitched. so the bread bible is stitched and my next cake book will be stitched but the only way to get a stitched binding cake bible is to bring it to a book binder. there is, however, a newly revised edition in which i have updated all the ingredients such as chocolate, and equipment. there is a small, quarter size, label on the upper right side of the front cover that says "revised ingredients and equipment sections.

Comments

jeff, i wish it were. but i'll never do an unstitched book again! and my new upcoming cake book will be stitched.

sorry for the confusion ... is the newly revised cake bible stitched now?

i also have a falling apart copy of the cake bible, and just trying to decide if it is worth re-purchasing.

i find there is no muffin as good as a home-baked one that is freshly baked. i taste a synthetic flavor in mixes that i don't like though you are right about their being more moist. when freshly baked, homebaked ones are moist enough to my taste. after cooling i wrap them well and freeze them. when thawed i sometimes heat them for a few minutes in a 350degree oven and they are almost like fresh and still quite moist.

I find that muffins made from scratch are almost always on the dry side and do not stay fresh very long. Mixes seem to be more moist, lighter and stay fresh longer with very good flavor. Any tips for those from scratch, other than do not over mix? Thank you.

Does anyone know when the revised edition of the Cake Bible is coming out or if it is already out? I'm from Australia, and we don't get any of Rose's fantastic books :(
