Summer’s Sweetest Reward—Tomato Time
Jul 29, 2006 | From the kitchen of Rose
no it’s not a dessert, though it has everything to do with a fruit: tomato. and yes! tomato is technically a fruit.
today was my first tomato sandwich of the season. i haven’t yet made this season’s bread that is my favorite to support the costar but i happened to have three slices in the freezer dated july 2005. (wrapped well in a good freezer the bread remains perfectly fresh and delicious.)
the bread recipe comes from my friend and “father of this blog” tim bennett of general mills. to a basic buttermilk bread dough he adds both fine and coarse cornmeal, both diced jalapeno and dried chipotle pepper, fresh corn kernels, and a whole head of roasted garlic. oh and some grated sharp cheddar cheese.
i cut a thick slice of this wonderful bread, toast it lightly, spread it with a little mayo, top it with an equally thick slice of beefsteak tomato, and grind a little red hawaiian sea salt on top.
when i’m feeling slim (which isn’t now) i add 2 slices of my favorite vt. corncob smoked bacon.
i enjoy the sandwich on the back porch surrounded by trees and fresh air trying to sit down-wind from my husband’s herring sandwich, knowing full well how profoundly smell (aroma is a gentler word) affects taste. more on this at a sooner rather than later date!

OK, I know it's the wrong season, but...
I just loved this post. Fresh-from-the garden tomatoes are one of my most favorite of all foods. Good just about any way you eat it. But your BLT on homemade bread, eaten while sitting on the back porch, is a reminder that warm weather really will return eventually.
Love the blog, BTW.

Bread is easily available for everyone and is generally liked by all age groups. Bread Laddu is an instant sweet recipe, and so this can be prepared within 10 minutes. Children love them when they are made attractive

lovely! there are two books i'd love to do and probably won't: one devoted entirely to salmon and the other to tomato!

Swoon! My favorite way to enjoy the first slicing tomatoes of the season is to lay a thick slab of tomato on half of an English muffin, and lay a slice of sharp cheddar cheese on top of that. Pop it in the toaster oven on broil until the cheese is nice and melty. This is particularly delicious with the heirloom orange tomato Kellog's Breakfast. : )

i'm pretty sure i'll get permission from its author but will have to give method for making biga as we both use sourdough starter and not everyone has it.

Yum. Juicy tomatos and a good piece of bread. To add a twist to a dinner party, I'll make mini cornbread cupcakes, use something like a guacamole as the frosting and place a cherry tomato on top.
Enjoy your meal.
