Hot Hot Hot (and Freezing Cold)
Aug 03, 2006 | From the kitchen of Rose
can you believe this! with temperatures reaching the low 100's this week, as a good citizen i'm turning off the bedroom airconditioner the moment i wake up and drawing the drapes to keep out the morning sun rather than turning on the second airconditioner in the large living/work room
i haven't turned on the big oven to bake all week opting for recipes that fit into my counter top oven that generates far less heat.
but when i call people who work in corporations in midtown and across the river in nj they are shivering with too much airconditioning.
one is wearing a heavy sweater and another is actually using an electric heater by her desk.
something is wrong with this oximoronic picture.

such a sad waste of energy and i just heard on the news that con ed is begging businesses between 14 and 40th street 5th ave. and the east river to reduce use.
the inevitable results are brown outs and blackouts. i'll never forget standing waiting for a bus on 5th avenue many years ago, peering uptown when suddenly all the lights of the city went out. i turned to look downtown and same thing. very scarey.
i live in a 30 story buildin and occasionally envy the view of my neighbors on the top floor (we're not talking about ceiling leaks during big rain storms). but not during a black out--imagine the heat up there and having to walk up and down 30 stories in the hot inferno.
i'm grateful to my husband for having realized years before he met me to chose a floor that is walkable (7the heaven!)

Such a good point! I work in a coporate office and we've been very cold in the offices, too, with the temperatures over 100 outside. I think part of the problem is that the A/C in this 18 story building is turned off at night along with the computers (a good thing), but in the morning to prepare for the arrival of employees, they crank it way down to cool it off quickly; the cooling then builds up a momentum that can't be stopped until it's turned off again at night. There never seems to be a happy medium of temperature in the summer....
