The Cake Bible 20 Years Ago

Jun 03, 2008 | From the kitchen of Rose

It doesn't get much better than this in the wish fullfillment department!

Comments

i've already given away two as gifts to two ecstatic little boys. posting will appear soon but as i'm leaving for vacation tomorrow it will have to come from afar!

the posters have arrived, and you can have them in up to 20x30-inches and 16x20-inches. download the JPEG file and take it to your favorite print shop.

it would be lovely if bloggers post a photo of their kitchens with Rose's poster hanging on it.

Woody is right! Everytime you post a story on the blog copy and paste it into a Word document so it's all in one place. Easier than writing it down.

REPLY

woody keeps telling me to write these things down and i keep thinking they'll pop back up when i need to put it all together but he's probably right!

glad you like the new stuff on the blog--i think it's absolutely terrific! will make it so much easier for everyone.

Another story to add to your book Rose!

The Amazon links look much better now. Love the facebook, print etc links at the top of the pages.

i had a pretty dreadful day too because the electricity was turned off for the entire buildilng for 10 hours! i had no idea just how bad it would feel to be cut off from the blog--real separation anxiety!
zach, the story behind the cake is that it belonged to a very special woman who had hired me once to improve her cakes for children's birthday parties. the book and cake kit we did together is on amazon. neither of us knew for years that it was her cake and that the prop was for me! small world.

Unfortunately, I don't get to the computer every day, but what a treat to log on today and see this photo. It just lit up my very stressful day. My patient load has been relentless all day and I was just contacted by the wife of a collegue about taking over some of his patients (apparently he is quite ill and unhapily retiring at 50).
Your blog and this photo just made my afternoon. Thank you soooo much! You and the photo are just adorable! (oh...and with respect to your black bra...not too much information at all.I seem to have gotten used to these things. Yesterday the manager of the hospital clinic asked me if I thought that the bra she was wearing made her look too "pointy".

Yes, I've heard of divorce cakes, and yes it is a trend and increasing business.

A commercial baker must do anything requested to stay in business. I keep this thinking in my mind, and daily remind myself to stay focus on the line of work I practice.

REPLY

Zach - I actually saw a photo of a cake exactly as you described yesterday. I couldn't think of why in the world someone would want such a cake, but now I realize it was a divorce cake.

For the record, I think the idea is in extremely poor taste, but I suppose that's how one might feel when getting divorced.

Just goes to show there's a market for everything.

REPLY

Zach, I've heard about divorce cakes too. I read about it on another forum once (don't remember the name of it, it came up on a google search when I was looking for something else).I am not very impressed with the idea. I think its in poor taste. Just my opinion. The people on that forum were hoping they'd get more orders for such cakes.

REPLY

Love, Love, Love it! How did I miss this 20 years ago? And how will "People" manage to match this when the new book comes out?

Best,
Julie

This may be a more appropriate topic for the forums, but I thought I'd post here first as it's a question I'm casting out. I have been seeing reference to the popularity of "divorce" cakes - cakes that look like wedding cakes but are for celebrating divorces (one I saw had a bride and groom on top but the groom was depicted as having tumbled down the cake in a trail of red food-coloring blood - morbid but funny at the same time). Has anyone experienced bakeries making these types of cakes or have seen them becoming more popular? It's an interesting trend. Just curious.

I love it. I love the little fine print statement, too.

They should have given you the cake prop as a momento.

REPLY

someday i hope to do a memoire--the sweet life--la vie en rose--name not important i do have many many stories.

REPLY

Thank you for sharing this picture Rose. You have such interesting stories to share.

REPLY

p.s. i've always thought that the stories behind the stories are the most compelling.

REPLY

welllll the same general look but upclose a few differences!

REPLY

HA!!! What a great story! Thanks for sharing (snicker... snicker).

Btw, you honestly look exactly the same now as you did then!

REPLY

I thought I have seen or heard it all on this blog, but this picture blew my entire mind away. IT IS AWESOME. The composition, the header, and Rose, is PERFECT.

And the cake prop is real. A work of carpenter artists. WOW.

And Rose, you do look just like now.

Consider the poster done.

The most beautiful and fragant Rose's have some nasty thorns! I would go for the admiration thought...you are a stickler for details!

REPLY

i assumed so!
maybe this is the perfect metaphor for my "darker" side. when i sent my great uncle nat (the one who was a graphic artist and designed the movado museum watch dial) my drawing of a rose for my stationary (this was at my mother's urging) he sent back a comment that it looked like a perfume commercial and drew me one he deemed more appropriate. there were huge thorns on its stem and a note saying "i stress the thorns"! i think he was saying this with admiration but it annoyed me just the same.

REPLY

I continue to become anon! It's me again...sorry Rose

REPLY

Yes! Brilliant idea.
I will never look at the picture the same again, now I know you are the angel with black underwear!

REPLY

thank you melinda--anonymous could have been a little scary!

maybe we could get hector to use the signature from the monthly blog greeting and superimpose it on this photo and then make it downloadable!

REPLY

Sorry, that was me above who somehow became anonymous. Please autograph poster for me Rose and I will hang you in my kitchen. I need an angel to watch over my baking! Cheers to you. Fab picture.

REPLY

ok--time for full disclosure! probably what's behind my expression is that no one told me i'd be wearing the white gown so i was wearing a black bra! there was no time or place to find a lighter colored one so the photographer gave me hers! it was a size too small but the only reasonable solution. i hope you're not thinking "too much information" but i just had to share that every time i look at that photo i think of that. there are photographers that give you the shirt off their back, but this one went one step further. credit goes to Lois Greenfield who also took my photo that's on the back of the Cake Bible.

REPLY

I need a poster of that!

REPLY

Wonderful shot--you really look like you were having a lot of fun!
