A New Baking Author on the BLock!

i love the title of this new cookbook and I love the author, Beth Lipton, even though we haven’t yet met except through this delightful book. At last, an author who has written her first cookbook, and even though it’s geared toward the beginning baker, is on the same page as I am concerning weights!

This bodes very well indeed for the increased trend toward weighing ingredients for baking rather than the far less efficient and potentially inaccurate measuring method. Not to worry, she also lists the traditional volume.

The book’s subtitle is “create fabulous treats, even if you can barely boil water.” Beth Lipton is also food editor for AllYou magazine and she knows how to write a recipe so that even the rank beginner is reassured and will succeed. Also very helpful are the many tips called “Good to Know” and the many color photos. Many of these recipes will intrigue the experienced baker as well. Check it out on Amazon where they are selling it for under $14! A perfect holiday present for your favorite aspiring baker.

In addition to being a new author Beth is also a first time mom. I love this picture of her and baby Dylan:

Can anyone advise in making the red velvet cake from Heavenly Cakes whether one can substitute Wilton (no taste) red paste gel for the bottle of red food coloring? If so, in what quantities, and will the color be the same type of red? Thanks in advance, some people can taste the red food coloring in the cake.

What a neat book, really wonderful photo, and I'm struck by the nice comments left so far - surely this new author has a wonderfully supportive network of family and friends!!

Best of luck with the babies, the little one and the book!

As Beth's mom,Mark's mom-in-law and Dylan's grandmother- I am so very proud of my family. Both Beth and Mark are extremely dedicated to their work and to their sweet daughter. Beth and Mark (Mark did all of the photo) saw the book as a labor of love. Their work ethic is strong and unending. Tama

Dylan's parents are both quite good looking so the baby comes by her looks honestly! It's a wonder that her husband Mark, isn't morbidly obese but also know that she takes very conscientious care with their diet. We are awaiting the delivery of her cookbook here in Mexico around the 1st of the year!
Go Beth!!!!!!!!

So glad to see that more and more books are publishing weights in addition to volume! And I can't help but think that you, Rose, were instrumental in starting this shift in thinking!

Hi Rose - small world but Beth's mom is a friend of a friend of mine up in the Berkshires - I bought her book as soon as it came out and am heading up for the weekend and will begin baking for Thanksgiving! I got the Turkey pan from Nordic and will bake something from your book and hers. Now I've added Gold Medal to my pantry I'm even more confused about flour. My fall collection of baking books include "All Cakes Considered" by Melissa Gray (of NPR), "The Craft of Baking" by Karen DeMasco & Mindy Fox, "The Grand Central Baking Book" by Piper Davis and Ellen Jackson (I love bakery cook books!!) and Flo Braker's "Baking for All Occasions" Everyone seems to side with unbleached - but I've learned my lesson and follow recipes exactly - I'll start taking photos and posting them!!
Have a great weekend!!

Hooray for Beth and the new book. Dylan is awful cute.
What suprises me most about the lack of publishing weight rquivalents in most beginning/intermediate (i.e. anyone can make this! it's easy!) recipes and cookbooks? It's that weighing is SO MUCH EASIER (and cleaner), and will instill a love of baking because it will make the finished products worthy of the effort put into making them, instead of a dry, dense, gummy failure.
I was shocked when cookbook authors I have met at booksignings said they had to fight for even weight equivalents in the cookbooks, and lost that fight, because the publishers felt the weights made the recipe unapproachable to the home baker. Thank goodness this book pushed through that counterproductive thinking.
Wow, I guess I feel strongly about this! :)

What a wonderful photo of mom and baby.
And I will give this book a try. I'd like to become comfortable using weight for measurement.
