irene, what i do is use a open-sided baking sheet to slip between the larger rectangular layers to lift them and then i slide them off the sheet on top of each other using the sheet to support them.

Any tips on layering larger cakes? Like 9x13 and larger? I find it more difficult to pick up these larger pieces without them breaking. Would you recommend baking thinner layers so that they don't have to be sliced in half?

Rose thank you for this! This is absolutely one of my "cake fears"! I've heard all sorts of "tips" but I think just scoring all the way around makes the most sense, I will definitely be trying that.
