I will add to this posting as I find out about more events so if you are interested in following this, please click on "post/read comments" and then on the little box at the bottom: "let me know if someone adds a comment"
Wednesday August 18, 9:00 PM, Thursday August 19 12:00, Saturday August 28 all ET/PT, the Food Network, Throwdown with Bobby Flay! I am one of the two judges. Here's the description of what was a terrifically fun event:
Tired of the rat race, friends and co-workers Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito left the grind of jobs in advertising to follow their tasty dream of opening a bakery. This led to the creation of their Elvis-inspired banana cream pie that has fans flocking from all over to their Brooklyn bakery to get a taste of this dessert that is fit for a king! Can Matt and Renato cream the competition with their heavenly dessert, or will Bobby's take on the classic pie reign supreme? The judges will likely scratch their heads until they declare a winner at this Banana Cream Pie Throwdown!
Sunday, May 9, 12:00 noon >to 12:30, Heritage Radio Network, host Katy Keiffer.
Saturday, April 17 KRON TV, host Henry Tenenbaum, out of SF exact time to be determined (Beranbaum means pear tree, Tenenbaum means fir or Christmas tree..hmmmm).
Saturday, April 17 KGO Radio--Dining Around with Gene Burns, one of my favorite radio hosts of all time. I was on his Cookie Exchange many years ago when he was in Boston and the last time I was on his show in SF was a few years ago for the Bread Bible.
Saturday, April 17 Omnivore Books--signing--from 3-4. This is a relatively new book store in Noe Valley, SF (3885 Cesar Chavez Street) and I've heard terrific things about the place. It happens to be right next door to one of my brother's Pet Food Express stores so you might get to meet him too! Woody and I will both be signing books and if you can't make it at that time, do call in and reserved your personalized copy.
Saturday, April 24, Powell's Book Store in Portland Oregon at 1005 W. Burnside. I'll be going over to sign books around 3:00 (this is not an official signing but this is a wonderful store that I'm sure you know about if you live in the area so if you happen to be nearby do come by and say hi!)
Wednesday, February 10, Joan Hamburg WOR Radio "Recipe of the Week" 12:06 to 12:25 East Coast.

loopy, the other judge and i were in full agreement. bobby was very encouraging and complimentary to the other competitors.
of course much was cut including the part where i told fellow judge always to have the point of a piece of pie or cake facing left for right-handed people so they will start there rather than at the usually less desirable end and he very graciously said that he would always listen to me because i am his cake goddess or some such sweet thing!
the judging went fairly quickly and we all had a ball. i ate an entire small pie after it was over--you can guess which one! oh those caramelized bananas--a great touch. come to think of it, coincidentally my banana cream pie video will go live on you tube this wednesday!

I just watched the show today! I could predict which pie you were going to choose..the layering of flavors, the crispy crust...it all seeemed like it was taking notes from the PBB. Could you give us any behind the scenes info? Did you and the other judge completely agree, or was there a battle? How long did the entire judging process take? And finally, is Bobby able to keep the other competitor's morale up and let them "save face" even after winning? Thanks and it was really fun to see you on the show!

Rose,
Great job on Throwdown! Very fun watching you. I watched it twice, actually.
Both pies looked delicious, but have to say Bobby's looked more polished and interesting. Not sure I would have enjoyed the peanut butter covering the banana too much - I like both, but I love banana cream pie.

It was fun seeing you on TV. I felt proud of you and proud to be a part of your forum.
After the show I went to the Pie And Pastry Bible to compare your recipe to the entries of the contestants. I think your recipe has characteristics both contestants used in their pies. You offer the choice of a cookie crumb or the sweet cream flaky crust (although Bobby's was buttermilk, you offer that as a variation). You use gelatin and so did Bobby.
Bobby's pie looked so much better to me. I especially like the hazelnut brittle garnish and will remember to use that some time in the future.
I'm not a big fan of peanut butter but I think making the Baked's recipe on occasion would be a nice change. I've seen their book but I never buy baking books using volume measurements.

Congrats, Rose. That should be fun. Of course, pie is perfect for you to judge. I loved "Baked" so it should be an interesting competition.
On a different note, I was looking through the Choc Banana Stud Cake recipe and last night and noticed that the baking temperature is missing, or at least I couldn't find it in my copy of the book. This cake is up next for the Heavenly Cake Bakers. I'm hoping you can set us straight. Thanks Rose :o)

the only other reason i can think of is that there may have been a draft. but you say the cake was not light and delicate so either you inadvertantly mis-weighed or measured, or it was underbaked.

I have had great success with The Cake Bible cakes, have made 3 wedding cakes from it and have made many angel food cakes. Last week I tried the tweed angel food cake from the new Heavenly Cakes book. To my shock, it fell out of the pan and flattened when I turned it over to cool. The batter seemed perfect, used non-teflon pan, oven temp was OK, cake seemed done - top was brown, and cake tester was not wet. In fact, the cake is edible and not wet on the inside, just not light and delicate. Did I not bake it long enough? This has never happened to me before!

Rose, I've been struggling with the ten-grain bread for a very long time. During the final proof the seam and or other areas of the shell tear apart. No amount of sealing prevents it. It's so disheartening to see after such careful attention has been given to this point. I have varied the hydration, amounts of grain, tried different flour combo's, shortened and lengthened proof times and temps. Even used a variety of shaping techniques, all to no avail. I love this bread and want to continue making it but the frustration is getting the best of me.
I would be grateful for any help you can offer.
Thank you.

Congratulations Rose on such a beautiful book! I have received my copy this morning (21st Sept.) and I am overwhelmed by the number of beautiful, succulent-looking cakes contained in it. I must admit I was a bit late in ordering it because I was anxious about the cakes being made with cake flour, but now that I have seen the contents I will get around that problem by either using 'Kate' flour or trying in some other way to procure the right flour. I may even make a special trip to the US, look out for me when on your book-signings, you never know I may surprise you, as you did me!!! Bless You!

I was so glad to read your comment. I am a seasoned baker and rarely have problems - until yesterday. I made the plum blueberry upsidedown torte from the new book for our Rosh Hashana dinner. I used great fruit my my farmers market - the cake released beautifully - looked great - I sent pics of from my I Phone too! All's well until we cut it - it turned out to be a soggy mess! I baked it 50 minutes - the cake tester came out clean and all that. I use King Arthur flour for years - and didn't see a problem substituting it for Gold Medal. I have made similar cakes in the past - usually with apples and never had a problem -- HELP!!!!
