My Heart Goes out to Hector

Aug 28, 2010 | From the kitchen of Rose

Recently, Hector e-mailed me about a bidding he was doing on e-bay for an antique Wilton two-piece angel food cake pan. I asked him to let me know if he ever saw another one as I love hearts so much I even wanted to use them as bullet points in my book but it got vetoed. (I did manage to get two heart-shaped cakes in the book!)

A few weeks later a package arrived and it was the pan. This was truly a gift from the heart.

I just learned that Hector had surgery yesterday as a result of a bizarre incident: When paddling in his one man canoe, a flying fish leapt out of the water, leaving several of its teeth embedded in his leg. Please join me in wishing him a speedy recovery.

Made the Bernachon Palet d'or Gateau yesterday. The ganache spread like buttercream. The cake is resting in the fridge for the glaze. I'll post a picture as soon as I figure out how to do that

Hector...get well soon! Thinking about you!

I hope you feel better soon, Hector. Hugs and thank you for all you do here. Get well soon!

Hector, hope you are feeling well very soon. When this is all over, you'll have a one-of-a-kind fish story to tell!

What a lovely gift, so nice to hear of it.

Rose, speaking of favorite pans- I must say that your wonderful idea to put the Gateau Breton in a deep tart pan is one I've used for that cake as well as a number of others. I love the beautiful, bare sides it creates while leaving the top flat for fruit or swirls of topping.

Hector, sorry to hear about your accident! (naughty fish). I hope you recover soon!

"I love hearts so much I even wanted to use them as bullet points in my book but it got vetoed."

Thank goodness; way too girly!

Speedy recovery, Hector! (Also, I think you should make a flying-fish shaped cake, then eat it, for sweet but symbolic revenge.)

Rose? How great my surgery posting comes with your own heart take! I love it. Many thx everyone. Let's see if I can prove today to the doctor that I can walk on my own (with crutches) so I can attend Toney's birthday party and bring her 16" heart cake I was working on all week! Manalos for your best wishes, glad the hospital has wifi!

Rose -- exercise author's prerogative and insert your heart bullet points. Having unique features are so important to standing out from the crowd (as if your recipes don't already lead the pack!). We all associate hearts with you. You own them!

Hector, all our prayers are with you for a speedy recovery. You will be back in your yellow kitchen before you know it, baking your beautiful cakes again.
