Blog Interview on 5 Books

Nov 09, 2010 | From the kitchen of Rose

Recently, I was most honored that Madhur Jaffrey, when interviewed for this site, chose one of my books (The Cake BIble) as one of her top 5. Now it was my turn to list my top 5 and though I adore Madhur's books, I don't do Indian cooking on a weekly basis, though it is my favorite cuisine. Therefore, the books I listed were the 5 that through the years I have used the most often. If you're interested to know which these are, click on the link!

I wanted to add an update. I bought three of Jaffrey's books: 2 on Indian cooking, and one on vegetarian cooking from around the world. I've been making a few dishes weekly, and all have been wonderful. It helps that there is an Indian market a few miles from my house, so I can get curry leaves, etc., very easily. All of this has really "spiced up" our typical dinners, which had gotten into something of a rut.

Love Indian, too. Takes me back to Goa. sigh.

Thanks, Rose. I've been really wanting to learn how to cook Indian food for a long time, and have just now ordered some of Jaffrey's books. It should be a fascinating journey.

We used to use Hazan all the time. Still do refer to it - and the book is literally falling apart, so I try not to use it so much; we also have an old paperback version that we use when we're in Italy. I have 3 more of her books, but it's the first that I always go back to. I used to make her almond cake very often - it's always a favorite when I make it (don't remember whether it's in the first or second cookbook). Her macedonia (fruit salad) is to die for. It's a revelation, and not to be missed; people swoon over it (well, at least I do). Her strawberry gelato is also good. I received the Hazan book as a gift after we had already lived in Italy, and it really took my Italian cooking to another level.

Wonderful article Rose. I love that it's not just a list but it's so nice to get an insight of what you love about each books and some examples. I'm going to check them out.

Oh and I don't like Italian dessert either. When I go to Italy I only have gelato. Gelato every day! :)

This was a terrific interview. Loved it. I have "on food and cooking". It was a gift from "my other half"...who incidentally knows very little about cooking. I LOVE THAT BOOK and refer to it constantly. I have some of Julia Child's books...but not this one. I'm definitely going to get the others on the list.

Loved reading your interview and seeing what you chose as your top five books! I already own three and am going to go look up the other two. Thanks for sharing that link (so sorry about the tomato briquettes!)
