David's Dreambars

Dec 07, 2010 | From the kitchen of Rose

This terrific recipe from Rose's Christmas Cookies has a small mistake that no one has noticed before. The reason, I think, is because 1 can of sweetened condensed milk used to be 15 ounces/430 grams so no one paid attention to the volume measure which was incorrectled listed as 1-2/3 cups whereas it should have been 1-1/3 cups.

But now 1 can is 14 ounces/200 grams which is actually 1-1/4 cups. This should be fine to use as it's only 4 teaspoons less but if manufacturers decide to shrink the can anymore we may all be in trouble for many beloved recipes!

we prefer them with the lower amount of sweetened condensed milk as they become sweeter with 1-2/3 cups. they are still plenty creamy though a little less than with the higher amount.

more of the condensed milk would make them more creamy. now we'll have to try it both ways to see which is best! thanks for posting this. sometimes mistakes turn out to be fortuitous! this could be one.

Hi Rose,

I've made these bars three times now with the 1 2/3 cups of sweetened condensed milk. I didn't realize this was too much. Does the lesser amount change the texture of the bars?

They turned out great anyways. So good in fact I eat them right out of the freezer. :)
