I need to purchase some new 9” round pans and I wanted to get Magic Line pans, but I can’t find any online in Canada that are 2” high.  I did find some Fat Daddios, but I wanted to know if any of you had tried them and if you were happy with the results?  All I can get here are Wilton ones and they are not great.  I do notice a difference between them and my Magic Line pans.

I have several of these pans and I have to say I don’t care for them.

They seem lightweight to me - like the old Wilton Performance pans; the square ones have rounded corners which make me crazy.  I bought a set of triangle shapes because I needed them quickly and couldn’t wait to get them from Australia and those weren’t bad.  But I bought 20 of the Fat Daddio 8” rounds for this past Passover and sent them all back.  They won’t hold up to the constant use in my kitchen.

I have Magic Line pans that I would pay a king’s ransom for if I ever needed to replace them.  I use these on an almost daily basis and they are still almost new looking.

If you are looking for alternatives, there was a site I used 10 years ago called Baker’s Dream (I don’t know what they are called now) that carried their own line of pans; I also buy pans from Pfeil and Holing in NY.  If you buy from P&H, you must specify you want their house brand pans otherwise they will sell you Fat Daddios.

You can also check eBay - I got a full set of square pans at an auction many, many years ago so it’s worth a look.

Good luck!

Thank you Jeanne!  I thought it was me, but I don’t like the Fat Daddio pans either.  I love my Magic Line pans.  I have several removable bottom, square and round, Magic Line.  I got some Fat Daddio removable bottoms earlier this year, and I sent them back.  I hate the rounded corners, I didn’t like the feel, and the removable bottoms didn’t fit right, they were bowed. I baked a test cake, and sure enough, my fears were confirmed, some of the batter leaked through to the other side.  The company I bought them from was very nice about it, and even contacted Fat Daddio about my dissatisfaction.  Fat Daddio emailed me, offering to send me some other pans to try, and I wrote back to accept the offer. That was the last I heard from Fat Daddio, so they are not high on my list on two counts now, product and service.

I got what I wanted in Magic Line on eBay.  That may be a good place to start your search.

Years back, I ordered removable bottom round pans from Ultimate Kitchen, and I see they still have some Magic Line.  But they too are going the way of Fat Daddio,  :(  You can look on this site to see if they have what you need.

Jeanne, do you mind sharing what brand of pans you order from Australia?

I get them from Iced Affair - they are the shaped tin pans (with lots of seams :( but they’re so well made I don’t mind cutting the parchment by hand to line them!) and they have a sticker with the shape of Australia in the center of them.  So I’m not sure what brand they are but I also found out there’s a shop here in MA (but a fair distance from me, I couldn’t just hop in the car to visit) called Lorraine’s that sells them (http://www.lorraines.com I think) and maybe the brand name is on that web site.

I have also ordered from Cake Deco in Australia; they both (Iced Affair and Cake Deco) are fantastic to work with; very helpful and accommodating.

Sherrie, I love my Magic Line pans (all 2” high) bought from a cake decorating store here on Vancouver Island. Wouldn’t trade them for any money! I’ll call them later when the store opens (still early on the West Coast) and ask if they would mind sharing the name of their supplier.

Thank you, everyone, for the excellent feedback.  It looks like I will be searching very hard for some Magic Line pans (which I used to be able to buy locally until the store decided to carry Wilton… :(  ) or importing them.  I’m glad I didn’t press purchase without consulting everyone here.

And Carolita, thank you for checking on this for me.  I really appreciate it smile

Re: Magic Pans, I called my cake supply store. They get theirs from the US—though she didn’t say, probably from cooksdream.com since they’re just across the water from us in WA. I notice cooksdream do have the 2” high pans. Not sure what kind of shipping charges and duty you’d face, but it’s an option.

But first, she said to check with McCalls in Toronto. Here’s their website: https://www.mccalls-cakes.com/index.html
Might be worth sending them an email. If not in stock, they do special orders. Or if you’re in Toronto, you could pop in. She said they’re at the corner of Dundas & Bloor.

Huge thanks Carolita!  I will check out both of the retailers you mentioned.  I am giddy with excitement as my copy of the new book arrived today and there are just sooooo many cakes I now want to try!  Point being, I need to order my pans!

I am in a minority here, but I own several Fat Daddio’s pans and have had no problems with them.  Even the stickiest goo cleans up easily.  The only thing I don’t like about them is that they are not recommended to be placed into a dishwasher.  Drat!
