Halloween is ‘celebrated’ by some in the UK but frowned upon by many church-goers. Because my family are all grown up I can’t say I take much notice of it apart from providing ‘treats’ at the door for little visitors. I’m happy to go along with whatever others agree to do, so long as I’m capable of the task!
I’m with Jeannette - will make something to hand out to the kids but it probably won’t be coloured orange! Last year I made a few things out of Rose’s Christmas Cookies, so will probably go there again.
I also was thinking about future bake-offs. Going through each chapter of RHC is a great idea (wedding cakes???) but it would exclude all the people who don’t have the book. I don’t know what percentage of the bake-off contributors have RHC but maybe we could do a topic on alternate months.

I have a suggestion. What about if the topic is from RHC but for those who wants to join but don’t have RHC, they can do the same type of cake from TCB? This way it gives the people who wants to bake through RHC the opportunity to do so, but does not exclude everyone else? I hope I make sense. By the way, I got my RHC book on Saturday (it was supposed to arrive on Monday) - and I’ve looked through the book for hours. I want to make everything in it - oh my, will have to go to the gym soon to work off the calories .
All good ideas, I was thinking on Orange Theme for October, for the letter O, the color of Halloween, and for several emails I got regarding replacing grand marnier with orange juice, and also RHC uses oranges quite a bit. I also have designed Hector’s Take for the pumpkin 3D cake, which will be morphed into a turkey 3D, it will be orange but most appropriate for November I dare.
Isn’t it right? Seens that everyone has the same reaction to the new book: wanting to make every recipe.
Homework for you shall I assign: please tell everyone to write a book review or your impressions on amazon.com for the new book. We like to read that! And Rose herself is loving reading what people have written on amazon.com for her new book. Check it out.
Had a bake a thon yesterday with my 3 nephews, we had a lot of fun, this time I showed them how to use my induction stove to head eggs for genoise and we also played with my newest weapon: the new redesigned Thermapen thermomete, fabulous!!!
It might be fun to do a series of bake-offs tied to the first letter of the month!!! Oct/Nov/Dec: Orange, Nuts, Decorations???? I’m plumping for decorations again because I got so side-tracked by life this month, including the new book. Intended to spend the whole month playing with chocolate to make all manner of choc decorations. Collected info and patterns, though and that’s valuable for the future. The decorations theme would tie in nicely with holiday baking (decorated cookies, fruitcake, etc.)
Not sure what we’d do for January, June and July though! lol There’s only one entry per book that starts with J—the Jancsi Torta in RHC and the jewel glaze in TCB.
Just my goofy comment from left field, which is where I seem to be this morning! But it would get around the issues of some people not having the new book and others not celebrating Halloween.
I understand we have one or two more chocolate posts coming for the September bake-off thread. Will look forward to those, but may have to let the RHC choc velvet fudge cake be *it* for me. Oh yes, also the wh choc decorations done late-Aug. that I posted a photo of to start our September bake-off thread.
Have we reached a consensus, do you think, about October? I like Hector’s suggestion of O for October/O for Orange. That leaves it wide open to play with anything flavoured or coloured orange. The Halloween theme, if people are so inclined, or any of the enticing cakes/bc/curd/candied peel etc. from Rose’s books, new and old.
My dear, sounds great, I am sure any theme will work, was fun to hear ideas. Just try avoiding narrowing down to just one single recipe because that is already done at Heavenly Cakes Place which didn’t fit my waist but after careful thinking, Marie’s idea is awesome, for the many people and beginners who need this kind of focus (restriction and guideliness).
Ok…. after having been the late girl in September (just submitted my entry!), I’ll try to keep up with the rest of you in October. No China this time, but a week of vacation and a week in Illinois and wherever else in the Midwest. Can’t wait till Thanksgiving, all the crazy travel will be done by then.
That being said - orange sounds fun! I think I’ll go with the fruit rather than the color. Loved the Orange Roses, and already looked enviously at Carolitas Lemon Roses. I’ll see if I can score some oranges from friend’s trees, although it may be a bit early for citrus.
Hmmm, do we have a topic? I’ll admit, I was hoping to do something orange/citrus in the winter, when seville oranges (and meyer lemons) are in season (most of the orange things I would like to do incorporate orange curd). But I could happily do the RHC pumpkin cake, or a chocolate/Grand Marnier genoise, so no worries if that option is chosen.
