Oh my goodness, yes. Get a turntable, heavy duty if you can afford it. I use a large offset spatula, a small offset spatula, and a bench scraper to ice my cakes. Honestly, I think a turntable is the most important factor - you can decorate a cake with a piece of cardboard if you have a good turntable.
You can find ball bearing housing thingies at a hardware store to make your own turntable (attach it to a piece of plywood and voila!). Lazy Susan turntables and spice cabinet turntables are often available at the grocery store. Check your local craft store as well - they often have cake supply items in stock. And if all else fails, ask a local bakery if you can purchase one through them.
