Ran across this article in the New York Times today about Southern Layer cakes. It talks about a woman that’s 77 years old, who has learned how to bake 15 layer cakes from her mom. She now still makes about 10 in a Christmas season, which is down from her high, which was 105 cakes.

Can you imagine baking 105 15 layer cakes? Or 10 of them when you’re 77? I’m in awe….

Silke, I was just going through the NYT and couldn’t believe the photo! Such a sweet looking woman baking a 15-layer cake! And once she made it 17 layers, and she wasn’t even trying. This quote is great, ?There doesn?t have to be a story. There can just be cake,?
I love articles like this ...the joy of cakes.

I’ve had 15-layer cake on my list to try for a while, so this was a welcome post!  The video clip is fun to watch.  Too bad they didn’t include the recipe.

The “little” layer cake is the 15 layer cake recipe.

Thanks for the great link.  I printed the three cake recipes and added them to my ‘to bake’ list, which is getting very long!

Thanks Jan. The “little” layer cake makes a 12-layer cake and from what I gathered by reading the recipe, there are 6 layers of cake and 6 layers of frosting.

The Lane Cake is also mentioned in this article. Epicurious’ version looks attractive enough to bake for the holidays. I like the apricot rose on the cake.

Patrincia—my list of “cakes to bake” may be longer than the cakes I have actually baked. Life is too short.

WOW!
Thanks for the link, Silke.
I agree that my list of things to bake is competing with the list of things I have baked!

So true Kathleen - too many cakes, not enough time.

I went to a friends house for a Christmas party, and I couldn’t believe she had this cake there!  She is of Hungarian descent, and says she bakes it every year.  It was good, very rich, but I enjoyed it, not overly sweet.  It is a lot of work though!
