OK…so I didn’t actually BAKE…more like fried…but here’s the story.  It was Friday night, it was raining in NY and I was low on eggs.  I had a cake to bake, curd to make…and breakfast on Saturday morning.  I was trying to come up with something to make for breakfast that wouldn’t require eggs…because I didn’t want to go out in the rain (Yes the store is 1 block away…but I was warm and dry…and alas…lazy).  My other half said: “do doughnuts have eggs in them?”  Doughnuts!  I have always wanted to make doughnuts…and yes, there is egg in them…but the challenge was worth the trip to the store in the rain. 

They take about three hours to make, if you include the rising time…but they were delicious!  (The two of us ate a dozen of them in one day).

The recipe had a glaze for the doughnuts…that tasted horrible…so I just rolled them in cinnamon and sugar (The picture looks like there is a ton of sugar on them…but actually only a tiny bit stuck…so they weren’t horribly sweet.  I will defintely make them again.

Doughnuts!!! What a great idea..  Hmmm… I may give that a shot.

Looks great Bill! I’m not a big fan of doughnuts only because they’re too sweet for me, but the homemade one is probably good.

I’e made them a few times, and they are sooo much nicer than bought ones, as most things home-made are IMO anyway!  You’ve reminded me of them, I must make them again!

Thanks for your comments.  Definitely give them a try…doughnuts usually aren’t that sweet…it is what they are covered with or filled with that is usually too sweet.  These were just right!

Lovely, Bill, even the texture of the outside looks craggy and delicious!  Were these a yeasted recipe, maybe like a brioche?

Yes, do you have a recipe source? I’ve been wanting to try these for a while. I always wondered what they would be like with the tops dipped in ganache instead of the typical chocolate frosting.

Oh Bill, you’re my hero! Where have you been all my life? I absolutely adore homemade doughnuts! Matthew’s idea sounds sinful, too. Again, lovely!
