Adding Gel Food Coloring to Cake Batter

I have posted on the White Cake subject this week and a discussion about making the White Chocolate Whisper Cake from TCB to use as a layered rainbow cake.  I was looking to see if anyone has had any luck with adding Gel Food Coloring to the Cake Batter?  Do I need to remove some of the liquid as Julia has stated?
