Tomorrow is Three Kings Day in Mexico, and across the country, everyone is buying or baking a Rosca de Reyes to celebrate the day. Traditionally, a small baby doll is inserted into the bread. Whoever gets it in their slice hosts a fiesta for all their friends on D?a de La Candelaria in February. You hope you don’t get the doll, because then you have to buy tamales and tequila for everyone and that gets expensive!

Last year I baked it as one large loaf, the way you usually see this bread. http://cookinginmexico.com/2010/01/06/rosca-de-reyes-three-kings-bread-for-epiphan/

This year, I made mini roscas to give to friends. And I made a frangipane, an almond filling to serve with the roscas. You can read more about this tradition and see the recipes on my blog, Cooking in Mexico. http://cookinginmexico.com/2011/01/05/mini-rosca-de-reyes-with-frangipane/

Happy New Year, everyone! Here’s to another year of great cakes, pies and breads.

Those are really pretty, Kathleen!  From the ingredients on your site, it sounds like a really yummy soft, sweet, spicy bread!  I love the way the little exteriors are decorated.

This year, I made mini roscas to give to friends.

Did you put babies in all of them so you could go party-hopping in February???

Kathleen,
I love the individual Rosca de Reyes. The large one done last year is beautiful and does look like a crown. They look delicious.  I love almond!
Happy New you to you and to All.

Anne, no I didn’t.  smile  But I should have….

Darm, thank you. I love almond, too. Can’t get enough of that frangipane. It takes all of my will power not to sit down with a spoon and consume the whole bowl.
