Is there a place that explains what the symbols / titles / etc. mean in the box to the left of the messages, the box that contains our screen name, Newbie/Member, etc.?  Thanks!

That’s a great question - I haven’t found any explanation yet, but I see the more you post, the more little blocks you get under your name.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ll take a stab at it:

There is, of course your screen name.  The pictures are called “avatars” and are chosen by the members; I haven’t had an opportunity to look around so I can’t tell you if there is a list of standard avatars you can choose from that come with the forum, although it’s obvious you can upload your own (you probably want to check this out by clicking on the links “Your Control Panel” or “Your Public Profile” at the top of the screen).

The designation “Newbie” and “Member” - I believe I saw “Jr. Member” as well - and the little red squares are predicated on how many posts you’ve made.  I’m still a “Newbie” with less than 10 posts, but Patrincia is a “Member” with over 60.  I’ve participated on forums where there have been members with literally thousands of posts who have designations like “I Have No Life” and such.  smile

I believe that covers the waterfront.

Janis, thank you!  I now have an Avatar, had no idea what that was.  smile  I chose my own from my pictures, you just have to make sure the file size conforms with the site requirements.

As a point of trivia, “avatar” means the embodiment/incarnation of a god (e.g., an incarnate of Vishnu).  The definition now extends to the little picture icons on web forum/chat sites - something that alludes to the Dungeons and Dragons/gamer/geek nature of early web chatters.

Fun reading on avatars here.

More trivia - “avatars” now refer to just about any little character/image in video games, as well.
