I seem to remember the instructions for Miette’s tomboy to be bake to internal temp of 200.  It took more than the 55 minutes to get there.  THe cake was crumbly on the outside and therefore difficult to decorate as shown in the book.  My torting was sloppy also.  I find the textue kind of like a cakey brownie. This is not a dislike ....but an obversation.  I will double check my oven temp and settings and will do this cake again.  I do like the flavor very much.  I cannot call this cake dry even with it being crumb excessive…... it is, of course, not as moist as FW’s MOM’s

I will do this cake again and maybe a third time in three pans.  smile

Regrets it is a terrible photo…I do have to budget my time to bake the cake and take a proper photo.

By the way, are you surprised that I am keeping with this experiment and moving along with it regularly?

Now what next?  hmmmm

Yes, I was also thinking of an oreo!  Is it frosted with whipped cream or buttercream?  Sounds like you liked it, but not as much as Mom’s. smile

Yes, Chocoholic.  It was moist.  Mom’s is an old fashioned layer cake recipe from Food and Wine.
Yes, Julie, it does remind me of an oreo also ....even in flavor because it was crumbly, I just decide to spread the buttercream from the top and sides all over to seal it.  Yes, I still prefer Mom’s,,,,but I will bake it again and attempt to match the photo.  I think I will do a Mom’s soon and try doing Bill’s buttercream .....

I wonder if something went awry?  The time it took to cook seems unusual.  I haven’t made this cake, but I think its fans love it because of its moistness (since it’s an oil-based cake).

Anyway, I think it’s cute.  I think it looks like a snowball.  A city snowball, grant it, but a snowball.

Hi CRenee,

I really like the cake, but it is a dark cake and if you are going for a less dark chocolate cake (say the choco fudge) then I can see where it wouldn’t fit every situation.  I can’t recall how long mine took to bake, but it was within the timeframes offered in the book.  I do recall the outside being almost cookie like crumbly, but it was a nice moist, fudgy cake.  I will make the FW Mom’s cake when my house gets cooler—perhaps I can try it for my upcoming bday!!

I like the flavor of the cake.  It is dark flavored like an oreo.
